Time Warner Suffers Widespread Outage

Many are waking up to no Internet service this morning as Time Warner Cable suffered a major Internet outage early today. During routine network maintenance at 4:30 a.m., an undisclosed issue with their Internet backbone disrupted the entirety of Time Warner Cable’s network, including Internet and on-demand services.

Enterprise System Monitoring – Value versus Cost

For the last 8 months I’ve focused most of my customer facing efforts on Foglight accounts that use Foglight for Enterprise System Monitoring. I engaged these accounts in the acting role of Customer Success Manager and have been active on a weekly basis in that role for many of these accounts. The Enterprise classification simply means that a firm monitors one or more technologies, on more than 100 and up to tens-of-thousands of servers.

Human Error, Downtime and Design

If one of the leading causes of data center outages is human error, why do we spend so much time focused on the tier classification or rating of a data center?  I would agree that the design plays an important part in reliability, but it’s a small part relative to people, process, operations, maintenance, lifecycle and risk mitigation strategies.
